Today's Surf Conditions at Sebastian Inlet
Spot Overview & Description
Perched on the north side of the long jetty guarding the man-made Indian River entrance, Sebastian Inlet remains Florida's most iconic surf destination. While beach replenishment and jetty modifications have altered the angle and currents, diminishing the legendary First Peak wedge of yesteryear, this stretch can still fire up some of the best waves on the East Coast when conditions align. The primary breaks unfold over a sandy bottom, with First Peak, Second Peak, Third Peak, and OK Signs/Swimmers lining the north side. When a hint of north creeps into the swell, Third Peak delivers fast, hollow lefts that demand sharp rail work. Farther up the beach, Chernobyles and Spanish House require a larger push of swell to yield their own left-hand tubes, offering a more elusive but rewarding alternative.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Sebastian Inlet is a classic East-Central Florida setup: an east-northeast exposure that catches Atlantic energy sweeping in from the Bahamas and beyond, but one that is also constantly at the mercy of the prevailing wind. The surf year builds through autumn, peaks in winter, then fades fast when the Bermuda High takes charge in late spring.
Best Surf Season (October - March)
For Sebastian Inlet, the meat of the surf year runs from October through March. The east-northeast-facing break gets a steady diet of E, ENE and NE swell as extratropical storms, Nor'easters and cold fronts energize the western Atlantic. Average wave heights sit in the 2.5-3.5ft (0.8-1.0m) range and periods cluster in the punchy 8-9s sweet spot, with the most reliable combination of size and clean wind in November, December and January. The negative phase of the NAO can park blocking high pressure over Greenland, shunting more storms down the Eastern Seaboard and delivering better ENE/NE swell with the right post-frontal W/SW wind. When a strong low lingers off the Carolina coast and a cold front is approaching, the inlet can light up with chest-to-head-high plus sets and offshore west wind.
