January: Winter Trade-Swell Engine

The North Atlantic high tightens its grip in January, and El Chinchorro sees the most consistent surf of the year. The average wave height climbs to 1.2m (4ft) with a 6.4s period, placing the spot in the average, punchy, rideable zone. Swell data show 43% of all energy arriving from the ESE and another 27% from the E, with smaller contributions from ENE and NE. The favoured SSW/SW/WSW window is essentially inactive - only 0.3% of waves come from those directions - so this is almost pure trade-wind windswell. On the wind side, NNW flows dominate with 38% frequency, and with the coast facing SE this is direct offshore wind. As a result, January often delivers clean, lined-up 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) peaks despite the short period. Air temperature averages 24.6°C, water temperature is 26.7°C, and precipitation is low at 0.79 mm/day. If a winter cold front nudges the wind more northwest and a stronger pulse of E/ESE swell arrives, it can be surprisingly fun.
