Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of winter brings the most consistent and powerful surf to Careneros. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts south, the Caribbean trades strengthen and an unbroken feed of NE swell arrives. Average wave heights hover in the fun-to-solid 1.0–1.5m range, with periods averaging in the punchy 8-second zone and often pushing into the powerful 10–12s bracket. Most importantly, offshore wind conditions dominate over 60% of the time thanks to robust high-pressure systems over the Gulf of Mexico that funnel NW to WSW winds along the Panamanian coast. This is the prime window for clean, rippable waves.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, November)

The transition months see a gradual decline in swell energy as the trades relax. Swell heights drop to the 0.9–1.0m range and periods shorten to the average 7.4–7.5s range, making for groveling conditions. The offshore wind window narrows to around 46–60%, with more frequent light onshore flow from the N–NE quadrant during the day. While not the dynamite of winter, these months still offer fun waves for those willing to pick the right windows—especially early mornings when offshore breezes still hold.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

From late spring through autumn, Careneros experiences its sleepy season. The ITCZ migrates north, weakening the trade-wind fetch and shifting the dominant swell source to a softer, more locally wind-generated NE swell with heights often below 1m and periods in the 7–8s range. September and October are the absolute low point: average wave heights dip to just 0.7m and offshore winds fall to a scarce 37–38%. Persistent onshore flow from the north and northwest adds chop to already small waves. Surfable days are rare, and only the most dedicated will find anything worth paddling out for.

January: Winter Peak at Careneros

January is the heart of the prime season. Average swell height hits 1.4m with a period of 8.3s, placing it squarely in the fun, solid category. An overwhelming 85% of the swell arrives from the NE, the optimal direction for this NE-facing beach, with the bulk of it (43%) in the 1–1.5m range and another 24.5% pushing 1.5–2m. The trade-wind belt is in full effect, delivering consistent wave energy. Offshore wind conditions are ideal a stellar 73% of the time. The wind rose shows a strong dominance of WNW (41%), NW (22%), and W (21%) winds, which, while not directly from the S–SW quadrant, often create clean, groomed faces due to local topography and the orientation of the bay. Expect punchy, rideable waves with occasional longer-period pulses that make for excellent rippable surf.
