Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during this six-month window, delivering pumping average swell heights of 2.5-2.8m with long, powerful periods (12-13s). Extratropical cyclones marching east across the Atlantic send consistent WNW-to-NW groundswells straight into the exposed West-North-West-facing beach. Offshore wind potential peaks at 28-39% of the time, as high-pressure ridges often nestle over the Iberian Peninsula, funneling light easterlies or, per local lore, optimal offshore flow from SW through WNW directions. This is prime time for firing barrels and long, walled-up rides.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

During these transition months, the North Atlantic storm track begins to shift north, dialing back average swell heights to 1.7-2.1m and periods to 9.9-11.2s. The wind window narrows to 14-20% ideal conditions, with more frequent nortada (N winds) that can create cross-shore chop. Still, when a late-season low sends a pulse of long-period W swell and a synoptic high aligns with offshore flow, Consolacao still serves up clean, fun-sized waves perfect for shortboard ripping.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with a whimper for surfers. Average swell heights drop to 1.5-1.6m and periods shorten to 8.6-9.2s, largely from local north-westerly windswells. The dominant N-to-NNW wind howls 60-70% of the time, producing choppy, onshore conditions and a mere 4-8% ideal wind frequency. While the water warms and crowds thin, expect only small, groveling waves unless a rare tropical storm or faraway low sends a pulse – a long shot indeed.

April: Diminishing Returns

The swell train begins to slow, with an average of 2.1m at 11.2s. The swell window still receives copious NW (25.1%) and WNW (19.7%) energy, but heights are trending smaller, with most waves falling into the 1-2m range (fun to good). Ideal wind percentage drops to 20%, as N and NNW winds combine for over 37% of observations, often at moderate strengths. This can produce choppy conditions, especially when wind speed exceeds 20kph. However, late-season lows can still spin up, and a well-timed SW offshore flow (4.9%) can transform a lumpy NW swell into smooth, rippable lines.
