Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during this six-month window, delivering pumping average swell heights of 2.5-2.8m with long, powerful periods (12-13s). Extratropical cyclones marching east across the Atlantic send consistent WNW-to-NW groundswells straight into the exposed West-North-West-facing beach. Offshore wind potential peaks at 28-39% of the time, as high-pressure ridges often nestle over the Iberian Peninsula, funneling light easterlies or, per local lore, optimal offshore flow from SW through WNW directions. This is prime time for firing barrels and long, walled-up rides.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

During these transition months, the North Atlantic storm track begins to shift north, dialing back average swell heights to 1.7-2.1m and periods to 9.9-11.2s. The wind window narrows to 14-20% ideal conditions, with more frequent nortada (N winds) that can create cross-shore chop. Still, when a late-season low sends a pulse of long-period W swell and a synoptic high aligns with offshore flow, Consolacao still serves up clean, fun-sized waves perfect for shortboard ripping.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with a whimper for surfers. Average swell heights drop to 1.5-1.6m and periods shorten to 8.6-9.2s, largely from local north-westerly windswells. The dominant N-to-NNW wind howls 60-70% of the time, producing choppy, onshore conditions and a mere 4-8% ideal wind frequency. While the water warms and crowds thin, expect only small, groveling waves unless a rare tropical storm or faraway low sends a pulse – a long shot indeed.

June: Small and Windy

Summer arrives with a whimper. Average swell height is just 1.6m at a period of 9.2s, predominantly from the NNW (38.9%) and NW (30.5%). These are short-period, locally generated windswells that produce weak, messy waves in the 0.5-1.5m range. Wind is ideal only 8% of the time, with the infamous nortada – N wind (30.1%) and NNW wind (28.6%) – dominating at moderate to fresh speeds. This creates constant onshore chop from the NW, ruining wave quality. The odd pulse from a distant low may sneak in, but expect summer to be a time for other activities unless you have a longboard and low expectations.
