Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during this six-month window, delivering pumping average swell heights of 2.5-2.8m with long, powerful periods (12-13s). Extratropical cyclones marching east across the Atlantic send consistent WNW-to-NW groundswells straight into the exposed West-North-West-facing beach. Offshore wind potential peaks at 28-39% of the time, as high-pressure ridges often nestle over the Iberian Peninsula, funneling light easterlies or, per local lore, optimal offshore flow from SW through WNW directions. This is prime time for firing barrels and long, walled-up rides.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

During these transition months, the North Atlantic storm track begins to shift north, dialing back average swell heights to 1.7-2.1m and periods to 9.9-11.2s. The wind window narrows to 14-20% ideal conditions, with more frequent nortada (N winds) that can create cross-shore chop. Still, when a late-season low sends a pulse of long-period W swell and a synoptic high aligns with offshore flow, Consolacao still serves up clean, fun-sized waves perfect for shortboard ripping.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with a whimper for surfers. Average swell heights drop to 1.5-1.6m and periods shorten to 8.6-9.2s, largely from local north-westerly windswells. The dominant N-to-NNW wind howls 60-70% of the time, producing choppy, onshore conditions and a mere 4-8% ideal wind frequency. While the water warms and crowds thin, expect only small, groveling waves unless a rare tropical storm or faraway low sends a pulse – a long shot indeed.

February: Consistent Power

Swell levels remain impressive, averaging 2.7m at 13.0s. The swell direction is again dominated by NW (17.3%) and WNW (15.8%), with a notable increase in NNW swell (11.9%) compared to January. This keeps the most favorable swell window wide open, delivering consistent, heavy sets in the 2-2.5m range. Ideal wind conditions drop slightly to 33%, as the percentage of moderate to strong N (16.7%) and NNE (8.0%) winds increases. These N winds blow cross-shore from the right, producing some chop but often still rideable. The sweet spot arrives when a WNW offshore breeze (5.1% total) combines with long-period groundswell leading to firing barrels on the outer sandbars.
