Extratropical cyclones marching east across the Atlantic send consistent WNW-to-NW groundswells straight into the exposed West-North-West-facing beach. Offshore wind potential peaks at 28-39% of the time, as high-pressure ridges often nestle over the Iberian Peninsula, funneling light easterlies or, per local lore, optimal offshore flow from SW through WNW directions. This is prime time for firing barrels and long, walled-up rides.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

During these transition months, the North Atlantic storm track begins to shift north, dialing back average swell heights to 1.7-2.1m and periods to 9.9-11.2s. The wind window narrows to 14-20% ideal conditions, with more frequent nortada (N winds) that can create cross-shore chop. Still, when a late-season low sends a pulse of long-period W swell and a synoptic high aligns with offshore flow, Consolacao still serves up clean, fun-sized waves perfect for shortboard ripping.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with a whimper for surfers. Average swell heights drop to 1.5-1.6m and periods shorten to 8.6-9.2s, largely from local north-westerly windswells. The dominant N-to-NNW wind howls 60-70% of the time, producing choppy, onshore conditions and a mere 4-8% ideal wind frequency. While the water warms and crowds thin, expect only small, groveling waves unless a rare tropical storm or faraway low sends a pulse – a long shot indeed.

May: Grovel Season Approaches

Average swell drops to 1.8m and period shortens to 9.9s, signaling a shift to windswell dominance. Despite still-frequent NW (28.4%) and NNW (29.9%) swell directions, wave heights are concentrated in the 1-1.5m range (fun-sized). The wind regime becomes stubbornly northerly, with N (27.0%) and NNW (20.6%) combining for nearly half of all observations. Ideal wind conditions plummet to 14%. Most days offer only small, groveling waves, often with unfavorable cross-shore winds. The rare window opens when a W or SW groundswell (8.3% and 0.8% respectively) meets light offshore flow from the SW – those days are golden but fleeting.
