Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during this six-month window, delivering pumping average swell heights of 2.5-2.8m with long, powerful periods (12-13s). Extratropical cyclones marching east across the Atlantic send consistent WNW-to-NW groundswells straight into the exposed West-North-West-facing beach. Offshore wind potential peaks at 28-39% of the time, as high-pressure ridges often nestle over the Iberian Peninsula, funneling light easterlies or, per local lore, optimal offshore flow from SW through WNW directions. This is prime time for firing barrels and long, walled-up rides.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

During these transition months, the North Atlantic storm track begins to shift north, dialing back average swell heights to 1.7-2.1m and periods to 9.9-11.2s. The wind window narrows to 14-20% ideal conditions, with more frequent nortada (N winds) that can create cross-shore chop. Still, when a late-season low sends a pulse of long-period W swell and a synoptic high aligns with offshore flow, Consolacao still serves up clean, fun-sized waves perfect for shortboard ripping.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with a whimper for surfers. Average swell heights drop to 1.5-1.6m and periods shorten to 8.6-9.2s, largely from local north-westerly windswells. The dominant N-to-NNW wind howls 60-70% of the time, producing choppy, onshore conditions and a mere 4-8% ideal wind frequency. While the water warms and crowds thin, expect only small, groveling waves unless a rare tropical storm or faraway low sends a pulse – a long shot indeed.

December: Winter Peak

December ties with January for the most consistent and powerful surf. Average swell is 2.7m at 12.8s. Swell direction is dominated by NW (18.6%), WNW (13.2%), and NNW (10.4%), but note an increase in WSW (2.7%) and W (5.5%) swell – all within the optimal window. Wave heights frequently exceed 2.5m, earning the XL and charging labels. Ideal wind frequency peaks at 39%, the highest of the year. The wind pattern shows a healthy mix of offshore quadrants: E/ESE (14.5%) and S/SSW (9.8%) combine with SW-WNW (14.1%) to offer plenty of clean windows. When the NAO index turns negative, expect a parade of deep lows and pumping west swell – this is the time to score epic, heavy waves at Consolacao.
