Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter storm track fires up consistently from October through March, delivering a steady diet of W, WNW, and NW swell to Falasarna's west-facing beach. Average swell heights range from 1.1m to 1.5m with periods frequently climbing into the 6-9s range, offering punchy, rideable waves. Offshore winds from the east and southeast sectors blow 12-14% of the time, often aligning with passing high-pressure systems for clean, semi-glass conditions. This is the prime window for scoring fun, rippable surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months see the North Atlantic storm machine start to slow down (April) or begin to rev up (September). Swell heights average 0.8-0.9m with shorter periods around 5.3-5.6s. While inconsistent, westerly swells still show up, and offshore wind percentages hover around 12-13%. The best days come when a late-season or early-season low-pressure system sends a pulse of long-period swell, but conditions are often small and grovelly.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The Mediterranean summer high-pressure regime locks in, flattening the swell. Average heights drop to just 0.7m with short, weak periods (5.0-5.3s). The dominant swell direction shifts to a mix of NW and WNW but in a very small, low-energy window. Offshore breezes from the east and northeast actually become more frequent (up to 16% in July/August), but the lack of significant groundswell means surfable waves are rare. It's a time for longboard cruises on the tiny bumps or days spent enjoying the beach.

January: Peak Winter Punch

January is the heart of winter, with the North Atlantic roaring at full strength. Average swell height hits 1.5m with a period of 6.6s, making it the most consistent month for solid, rideable waves. The swell direction is dominated by W (15.7%) and WNW (13.8%), both of which hit Falasarna perfectly, along with a healthy dose of WSW (10.1%). Nearly 80% of the waves come from the western quadrant, and over 30% of all swell is in the 1-2m range, giving plenty of punchy, firing surf. Wind is tricky — the ideal offshore directions (E, ESE, SE) only total about 5.5%, while onshore WSW-WNW winds blow 26.5% of the time. Still, when a high-pressure ridge stalls over the Balkans and the fetch aligns from the NE, the combo of clean offshore winds and strong westerly groundswell can produce epic sessions.
