Summer at Porth Neigwl is a mixed bag—small and often messy. The wind pattern becomes the main spoiler: onshore breezes from the SW and W dominate, and the proportion of offshore winds plummets to 15-18%. This means many days are blown out or choppy. However, occasional pulses of longer-period swell from a distant storm can still light up the beach, especially if a ridge of high pressure provides light easterly winds. On those rare days, you'll find small but fun waves peeling along the banks. But for the most part, summer is a time to wait for a cold front to push through and reset the pattern.

August: Similar Summer Funk

August is a carbon copy of July in terms of average swell: 1.2m and 8.4s period. The swell direction breakdown is nearly identical, with W (36.5%), WSW (20.4%), and WNW (15.5%) leading. Once again, the short period limits quality, and most waves are soft and weak. The ideal wind percentage is 16%, slightly better than July but still poor. The wind rose shows a similar pattern: strong SW, WSW, and W winds (10.4%, 11.2%, and 11.4%), combined with NW and NNW winds (8.3% and 8.0%). The onshore flow is relentless. The only surfing windows occur when a tropical storm or distant hurricane sends long-period swell across the Atlantic, or when a slow-moving high allows light easterly flow. These events are brief and far between. For the average surfer, August is a month to focus on other water sports or explore the north coast of Cornwall where the swell might be slightly bigger.
