Swell directions are still dominated by W and WSW, but lighter wind speeds mean more rideable days overall. Summer at Porth Neigwl is a mixed bag—small and often messy. The wind pattern becomes the main spoiler: onshore breezes from the SW and W dominate, and the proportion of offshore winds plummets to 15-18%. This means many days are blown out or choppy. However, occasional pulses of longer-period swell from a distant storm can still light up the beach, especially if a ridge of high pressure provides light easterly winds. On those rare days, you'll find small but fun waves peeling along the banks. But for the most part, summer is a time to wait for a cold front to push through and reset the pattern.

June: Summer Doldrums Begin

June marks the start of the low season at Porth Neigwl. Average swell height bottoms out at 1.2m, with a period of just 8.7s—that's marginal, choppy surf for most days. The swell direction is still dominated by W (31.5%) and WSW (21.3%), but the short period means the waves lack punch and are easily blown out. A significant portion of the swell comes from the W, which is good for exposure but often accompanied by onshore winds from the same direction. Ideal wind conditions drop to 18%, with the wind rose showing a strong increase in SW, WSW, and W winds (9-11% each). These onshore winds create bumpy, disorganized conditions most of the time.
