This is when the percentage of offshore winds peaks, as the subtropical high strengthens, funneling clean, sideshore breezes from the SSW and SW across the lineup. Fair Surf Season (June - August)

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere delivers a steady diet of solid SW and W swell, but the wind consistency drops slightly. The dominant high-pressure cell weakens, allowing more variable conditions, including occasional strengthening of the onshore flow. Still, the periods remain long (12-13s), and when the breeze cooperates from the S or SSW, waves become punchy and hollow on the point. Expect some overhead days mixed with wind-affected sessions.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer brings a milder synoptic pattern. The South Pacific storm track retreats slightly, and average swell heights hold steady but with a smaller percentage of clean, long-period energy. The wind ideal percentage dips into the low 60s, and the stronger thermal flows can produce afternoon onshores. However, morning glass-offs and SW pulses still provide plenty of rideable, fun-sized waves. This is a reliable period for smaller, rippable conditions with the occasional clean window.

March: Autumn Transition & Peak Offshore Reliability

March marks the beginning of the best surf season as the subtropical high strengthens. Average swell height holds at 1.6m, period bumps to 13.0s, and the wind is ideal 69% of the time. Swell continues from WSW (70.6%) and SW (18.7%), but the added period cleans up the wave shape. Wind direction shifts more consistently to SSW (22.3%), SW (30.3%), and S (9.9%), with light speeds providing a glassy surface. The percentage of onshore winds drops slightly. This month offers the highest consistency of clean conditions. Waves are solidly in the fun to pumping range (1-2.5m), with long period making them powerful and rippable. The only downside is the lack of north swell, but the sideshore wind mitigates that.
