Best Surf Season (April - June)

As the Indian Ocean monsoon trough shifts north, the trade winds relax and One Palm Point enters its prime window. During these months, long-period groundswells from the deep south (SSW to SW) wrap around the point, delivering consistent, powerful waves averaging 1.5 to 1.8m. More importantly, the wind regime becomes dominated by favourable S to WSW offshore breezes, grooming the waves into clean, rippable lines. With ideal wind conditions 48-60% of the time, this is the epicentre of the year for surfers chasing quality, smooth faces and decent size.

Fair Surf Season (November - March)

The fair season coincides with the early and late winter monsoon. Swell heights hold steady around 1.5m with good periods of 12-13 seconds, primarily from the SSW to WSW quadrants. However, the wind blows onshore from the NW to WNW more frequently, limiting clean conditions to roughly 15-42% of the time. When the offshore windows align with the occasional wrap-around swell, the point can fire, but consistency is lacking; you'll need to pick the right days.

Low Surf Season (July - October)

Mid to late summer sees the Indian Ocean roaring with powerful long-period swells, peaking at 2.0-2.1m in August and September. Yet, these months are humbling for One Palm Point. The wind becomes overwhelmingly cross-onshore from the SE to SSE, with ideal offshore conditions dropping to a mere 10-21%. The combination of big, raw swell and choppy, onshore wind makes for challenging, often unsurfable conditions. Only the rare, fleeting window of a southerly shift offers hope.

December: Early Summer Style – Wait for the Window

December averages 1.5m swell with a period of 12.3s. Swell comes from the usual suspects: SSW (46.7%), SW (22.8%), and WSW (14.8%), with some S swell (8.4%). The wind pattern sees a return of onshore WNW and NW flow (combined 22.3%) and a moderate SE wind (8.5%). Ideal wind conditions are 35%—not great but not terrible. The key in December is timing: early morning land breezes from the SE often become more variable as the day goes on. When a frontal system pushes through, the wind can swing to a clean S or SW. The surf is generally fun-sized and punchy, with occasional bigger days from a passing storm track. Patience pays off.
