Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is prime time for Praia da Rocha. The North Atlantic storm track is active, consistently sending long-period swell toward the Algarve. Average wave heights range from 1.1m to 1.4m and periods from 11.1s to 12.9s, offering powerful, well-formed waves. Offshore wind frequencies peak during these months (37-43%), with northerly and northeasterly flows providing clean grooming. While the dominant swell direction is often from the northwest, it refracts into the beach and combines with occasional direct southwesterly swell for variety. Expect consistent surf with plenty of head-high to overhead sets.

Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)

Transitional months bring a mix of conditions. Swell energy decreases from winter's peak, with average heights dropping to 0.8-1.1m and periods shortening to 8.9-10.8s. Offshore winds are less frequent (28-37%), but still occur often enough for clean sessions, especially in the mornings. This is the time for smaller boards and groveling when the swell is low, but occasional late-season or early-autumn storms can still deliver fun, rippable waves. September sees a notable uptick in period and offshore wind percentage as the Atlantic comes back to life.

Low Surf Season (July - August)

Summer is the quietest time for surf. Average wave heights drop to 0.7-0.8m with short periods around 8-8.6s, resulting in small, weak surf. The dominant swell comes from the NW and NNW but lacks the power to wrap effectively. Offshore wind percentages are the lowest of the year (27-30%), and the reliable northwesterly winds often have a cross-shore component. Expect small, fun-sized days suitable for longboards or soft tops, but don't expect pumping surf. Early mornings offer the best chance for clean conditions before the sea breeze kicks in.

January: Peak Winter Power

January delivers the highest average swell height (1.4m) and longest period (12.9s) of the year. The North Atlantic is in full fury, with deep low-pressure systems generating powerful, long-period swell trains. While the dominant swell direction is from the WNW (37.2%) and NW (23.4%), these waves wrap around the eastern side of the Algarve and refocus into the SSW-facing bay with good shape. Direct swell from the S-SW quadrants accounts for a smaller share (8.8% total) but can produce exceptional quality when aligned with offshore winds. Speaking of wind – offshore conditions blow 43% of the time, predominantly from N (12.7%) and NNE (8.6%), which groom the swell into clean, lined-up faces. Expect plenty of fun 1-1.5m waves (35.7% of all swell) and a solid 34% in the 1.5-2m+ range. The occasional low-pressure system pulling in from the southwest will bring onshore winds – avoid those days. When the stars align – a strong high over Europe, a storm northwest of the Azores – you get waves firing under sunny skies. This is the month to hunt for epic sessions.
