Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is prime time for Praia da Rocha. The North Atlantic storm track is active, consistently sending long-period swell toward the Algarve. Average wave heights range from 1.1m to 1.4m and periods from 11.1s to 12.9s, offering powerful, well-formed waves. Offshore wind frequencies peak during these months (37-43%), with northerly and northeasterly flows providing clean grooming. While the dominant swell direction is often from the northwest, it refracts into the beach and combines with occasional direct southwesterly swell for variety. Expect consistent surf with plenty of head-high to overhead sets.

Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)

Transitional months bring a mix of conditions. Swell energy decreases from winter's peak, with average heights dropping to 0.8-1.1m and periods shortening to 8.9-10.8s. Offshore winds are less frequent (28-37%), but still occur often enough for clean sessions, especially in the mornings. This is the time for smaller boards and groveling when the swell is low, but occasional late-season or early-autumn storms can still deliver fun, rippable waves. September sees a notable uptick in period and offshore wind percentage as the Atlantic comes back to life.

Low Surf Season (July - August)

Summer is the quietest time for surf. Average wave heights drop to 0.7-0.8m with short periods around 8-8.6s, resulting in small, weak surf. The dominant swell comes from the NW and NNW but lacks the power to wrap effectively. Offshore wind percentages are the lowest of the year (27-30%), and the reliable northwesterly winds often have a cross-shore component. Expect small, fun-sized days suitable for longboards or soft tops, but don't expect pumping surf. Early mornings offer the best chance for clean conditions before the sea breeze kicks in.

June: Early Summer Lull

June brings the smallest average swell of the year so far at 0.8m and period dropping to 8.9s. The swell is almost entirely from the NW (43.1%) and WNW (30.1%) – these are long-fetch waves that wrap in but lack power. Direct S-SW swell is minimal (1.5% total). Offshore wind probability hits a low of 28%, with N (7.5%) and NNW (23.2%) being the primary offshore sources. However, NNW wind at this spot is actually slightly cross-offshore – still clean but not as ideal as true N or NE. The wind rose shows a strong NW component (21.0%) which is cross-onshore. Swell heights: 73% in the 0.5-1m range, only 19% in 1-1.5m. The period is in the average range, giving punchy but short rides. June is a month for small-wave equipment and micro-sessions. The most promising pattern is a ridge of high pressure to the north that delivers light offshore ENE winds in the early morning, smoothing out the small NW swell. It's not a month to plan a surf trip around, but locals still get some fun waist-high waves.
