Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is prime time for Praia da Rocha. The North Atlantic storm track is active, consistently sending long-period swell toward the Algarve. Average wave heights range from 1.1m to 1.4m and periods from 11.1s to 12.9s, offering powerful, well-formed waves. Offshore wind frequencies peak during these months (37-43%), with northerly and northeasterly flows providing clean grooming. While the dominant swell direction is often from the northwest, it refracts into the beach and combines with occasional direct southwesterly swell for variety. Expect consistent surf with plenty of head-high to overhead sets.

Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)

Transitional months bring a mix of conditions. Swell energy decreases from winter's peak, with average heights dropping to 0.8-1.1m and periods shortening to 8.9-10.8s. Offshore winds are less frequent (28-37%), but still occur often enough for clean sessions, especially in the mornings. This is the time for smaller boards and groveling when the swell is low, but occasional late-season or early-autumn storms can still deliver fun, rippable waves. September sees a notable uptick in period and offshore wind percentage as the Atlantic comes back to life.

Low Surf Season (July - August)

Summer is the quietest time for surf. Average wave heights drop to 0.7-0.8m with short periods around 8-8.6s, resulting in small, weak surf. The dominant swell comes from the NW and NNW but lacks the power to wrap effectively. Offshore wind percentages are the lowest of the year (27-30%), and the reliable northwesterly winds often have a cross-shore component. Expect small, fun-sized days suitable for longboards or soft tops, but don't expect pumping surf. Early mornings offer the best chance for clean conditions before the sea breeze kicks in.

May: Grovel Season Begins

May is when summer starts to settle in, with average swell height falling to 0.9m and period dropping to 9.6s – solidly in the average, punchy range. The swell direction is heavily dominated by NW (34.6%) and WNW (27.7%), while direct S-SW swell accounts for only about 4% – not ideal, but the NW waves still wrap in with some energy. Offshore wind frequency is down to 29%, with N (8.7%) and NNW (18.7%) still the main offshore contributors, but NW winds (17.9%) are strong and often bring cross-shore chop. The wind rose also shows an uptick in SW to W winds (20.4% combined) – these are onshore and kill the waves. Swell heights are mostly in the small category: 68% in the 0.5-1m range, 22% in 1-1.5m. Rippable conditions exist when a lingering high keeps offshore easterlies (E, ESE) flowing. May is for the dedicated surfer willing to hunt for small, clean waves on a groveler or longboard. Early dawn patrol before the seabreeze ruins it is the move.
