Best Surf Season (October - November)

As the northeast monsoon begins to waver and the intertropical convergence zone shifts, October and November serve up the most promising balance of swell size and offshore potential at Lucky Point. Average wave heights climb to a solid 1.4–1.7m with periods cresting into the 9–10s range, offering powerful, punchy lines. While the wind statistics show ideal offshore conditions only 19% of the time in October and a scant 4% in November, the autumn transition is the one window when synoptic patterns can align—a passing cold front or a tropical cyclone tracking north can flip the wind from the dominant NE/ENE to a clean SW or W flow. Those golden windows reward the patient surfer with pumping, glassy waves that wrap into the beach.

Fair Surf Season (December - April)

Winter and early spring bring the largest swell of the year, with average heights ranging from 1.3m in April to a peak of 2.1m in December and January. The wave period hovers around 9s, which translates to powerful, long-period swell that can produce heavy, firing conditions when the wind cooperates. However, the northeast trades dominate the region during these months—NE and ENE winds blow over 70% of the time, directly onshore at this Ost-Nord-Ost facing beach. As a result, the surf is often choppy, messy, and blown out. The wind is ideal only 1–2% of the time, meaning you need a rare westerly wind event or a local sea breeze to salvage a session. On the bright side, when the planets align, you’ll find epic, pumping surf with minimal crowds.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From late spring through early autumn, the southwest monsoon takes hold, delivering the highest frequency of offshore winds (SW–WNW). Ideal wind percentages climb from 15% in May to a peak of 49% in August, making for clean, groomed waves more often than not. Unfortunately, the swell takes a big hit during these months. Average wave heights drop to a modest 0.9–1.0m with periods in the 8–9s range, resulting in small, fun-sized, groveling surf. The dominant swell direction shifts from the winter’s NE/ENE to a mix of E and even some S–SW pulses, but those southerly swells are poorly exposed at Lucky Point and rarely produce rideable waves. While you won’t find any epic barrels here, the consistent offshore winds make this the most reliable period for a longboard or a groveler, with clean, rippable walls that stay fun all day.

April: Swell Decline, Wind Begins to Shift

April’s average swell height drops to 1.3m with a period of 8.8s, giving predominantly small, fun-sized waves in the 1–1.5m range (46.1% from ENE). The swell direction is still heavily ENE (63.8%) and E (22.1%), with a small NE component (12.6%). The wind pattern shows a notable change: ENE and E winds remain common (27.5% and 29.8% respectively), but the once-dominant NE trades fall to just 12.3%. Offshore wind directions (SW–WNW) appear slightly more often, totaling about 0.5%. Ideal wind frequency climbs to 2%—still low, but double the previous months. April is a month of tantalizing potential: the swell is small but clean enough on a rare offshore day. The trade winds are still strong, but the beginning of the SW monsoon can bring occasional light westerly breezes in the afternoons. For a longboard or a fish, this can be a solid month when the stars align.
