Best Surf Season (May - August)

The austral winter is the prime time for Jake's Point. As the Southern Ocean whips up powerful storm systems, long-period SW swell trains march toward the Australian coast. Combined with the highest probability of offshore easterly winds (up to 48% in June), this window delivers the most consistent and quality waves. Swell heights average 1.8-1.9m with periods exceeding 12 seconds, bringing punchy to powerful surf. The wind often cleans up the ocean surface, creating rippable conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transition months offer a blend of winter's swell potential with improving or degrading conditions. April sees the start of the good winter pattern with 42% ideal wind and periods increasing to 11.5s. September still carries heavy SW swell but wind consistency drops to 34% as the trade winds shift. You can score solid waves but with more variable conditions.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

The austral spring and summer months are characterized by persistent southerly winds and a dominance of shorter-period S/SSW swell that rarely aligns with the optimal west-northwest exposure. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 16-24%, and the average period hovers around 9-10 seconds, often resulting in average to choppy surf. The rare frontal system may bring a brief window of W-NW swell, but good days are few and far between.

January: The Summer Lull

January at Jake's Point is mid-summer, and the surf reflects that. With an average swell height of 1.9m and a period of just 9.1s, the energy is short-period and often messy. Dominant swell pours in from the south and south-southwest (over 78% combined), missing the optimal W-NW window almost entirely. The wind is predominantly from the south and SSE (over 60%), the opposite of the preferred easterly quadrants. Ideal offshore wind (ENE-SE) occurs only 18% of the time, so quality windows are fleeting. Persistent high pressure over the Tasman Sea locks in these southerly winds, leaving the surface lumpy. On rare days when a weak trough flips the breeze to the east, fun-sized waves appear, but they are the exception.
