Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transition months offer a blend of winter's swell potential with improving or degrading conditions. April sees the start of the good winter pattern with 42% ideal wind and periods increasing to 11.5s. September still carries heavy SW swell but wind consistency drops to 34% as the trade winds shift. You can score solid waves but with more variable conditions.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

The austral spring and summer months are characterized by persistent southerly winds and a dominance of shorter-period S/SSW swell that rarely aligns with the optimal west-northwest exposure. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 16-24%, and the average period hovers around 9-10 seconds, often resulting in average to choppy surf. The rare frontal system may bring a brief window of W-NW swell, but good days are few and far between.

November: The Decline

November deepens the spring slump. Swell height averages 1.8m and period drops to 10.1s—the shortest in months. S and SSW swell dominates at a combined 63.9%, missing the mark for the WNW exposure. Ideal wind is only 18%, with southerly winds (S and SSE) making up nearly 49% of the breeze. The large-scale setup features a persistent high east of Tasmania, driving SE flow that is often too strong and not quite offshore. The result is mostly choppy, average surf with a few fun-sized waves when a rare east wind lines up. Patience is required.
