Best Surf Season (May - August)

The austral winter is the prime time for Jake's Point. As the Southern Ocean whips up powerful storm systems, long-period SW swell trains march toward the Australian coast. Combined with the highest probability of offshore easterly winds (up to 48% in June), this window delivers the most consistent and quality waves. Swell heights average 1.8-1.9m with periods exceeding 12 seconds, bringing punchy to powerful surf. The wind often cleans up the ocean surface, creating rippable conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transition months offer a blend of winter's swell potential with improving or degrading conditions. April sees the start of the good winter pattern with 42% ideal wind and periods increasing to 11.5s. September still carries heavy SW swell but wind consistency drops to 34% as the trade winds shift. You can score solid waves but with more variable conditions.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

The austral spring and summer months are characterized by persistent southerly winds and a dominance of shorter-period S/SSW swell that rarely aligns with the optimal west-northwest exposure. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 16-24%, and the average period hovers around 9-10 seconds, often resulting in average to choppy surf. The rare frontal system may bring a brief window of W-NW swell, but good days are few and far between.

March: Autumn's Promise

March marks the onset of autumn, and the surf begins to respond. Average swell height holds at 1.7m, but the period jumps to 10.3s, signalling the arrival of longer groundswell from the Southern Ocean. The swell mix shifts: while S and SSW still dominate (77.1%), the SW component increases to 13.6%, bringing the first real taste of optimal direction. Ideal wind hits 30% as easterly breezes become more common (ENE through SE combine for over 30% of the wind). Still, southerly winds remain strong (47% from S and SSE). The transition is underway—when the east wind lines up with building SW swell, the result can be clean, fun-sized waves.
